Arne Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Support Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's understandable for concerns to be asked about his position following a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their ninth defeat in 12 games, representing the team's worst streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a tough evening at Anfield.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I have got a lot of support from the top,” the coach commented.
“It's important to change things and secure a win of course but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a difficult position but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Conversations with The Board
When asked to elaborate on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful to the team and to me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “In the normal exchanges I feel the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them after this game so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Reaction
Slot highlighted familiar shortcomings from his squad in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” Jones said.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a period of this nature with performances like these.”
Jones stated, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“We will attempt to help the side return to where it needs to be, prove again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the top club in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
