Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
