Taking action inspired by fictional guards, Denmark's foreign affairs department has initiated a night watch team—far from guarding against mythical foes, but to track Donald Trump as Copenhagen is asleep.

The night watch begins at 5pm in Denmark daily and ends with a summary produced at 7 a.m., which is then circulated throughout government departments and concerned offices covering what was said and developments taking place.

This position is believed to have been established following the diplomatic row between Denmark and the US regarding Greenland this spring, when the US president suggested taking control of the strategic territory.

Analysts point out that this measure is one of several instances of how Denmark's foreign policy and its government administration have had to adjust to the new reality of the second Trump administration.

A source familiar with the ministry remarked, “It's accurate to say that the circumstances in Greenland and the time zone gap between Denmark and the US was a significant factor introducing this system in the spring.”

Rather than everybody having to immediately check their devices to catch up on updates from the US, the foreign office said it had made a coordinated approach to stay updated on Trump activities.

An expert, a former chief analyst at the defense intelligence service, commented that this move demonstrated, “as long understood,” that the notion of the US as Denmark's largest and most important partner was dead. “Alliances are founded on common values and a common threat perception,” Kaarsbo added. “Trump shares neither of those with us and I would argue he lacks it with the majority of Europe.”
