Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Exits After Shift Into Fried Chicken.
A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the company into poultry items has been removed after disagreements with its governing body.
Executive Shake-Up
Rennie is departing after only 24 months in charge, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a permanent CEO.
Rennie, who served at Domino's for over 20 years, had attempted to pivot Britain's largest pizza takeaway chain towards poultry-based products, commenting recently there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He said poultry was the most rapidly expanding food category in the world.
Governance Disagreements
It is understood that there was disagreement between Rennie and the directors over his strategy and business vision, although Domino's official statement said he was departing “as a joint decision”.
Recent Product Launch
In September, the chain unveiled its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is trialling it in select stores in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the business is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as planned, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Comment
Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and value creation in Domino's core business. We are focused on selecting the suitable leader to direct the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said sales fell by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.
Competitors are also facing challenges. Another major chain announced the shutting of 68 restaurants a recently, after the business behind its outlets faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Responding to market shifts towards balanced diets, Domino's has introduced lower-calorie products, such as its Thin & Crispy range of bakes below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and gluten-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the gaming group a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to assume the chief executive role on a full-time basis.
She commented: “The company has a multiple ongoing growth and operational projects that we will be concentrating on implementing at a rapid rate.”
She added these involved ongoing development on the organization's procurement system and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also lacking a permanent chief financial officer until 16 March, when Andrea starts from the Irish cider and beer maker C&C Group. For now, Richard Snow serves as acting financial officer.
