Outrage as Popular South African DJ Shot Dead in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.
Officials stated the 40-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.
The reason of the attack is unknown and no arrests are in custody, police said.
Details of the Attack
Authorities revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location near the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the property overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, as per local media.
"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," a police statement stated.
Security camera video reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and clad in what appeared to be a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the assault.
Key evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the location.
Call for Public Assistance
Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to determine their whereabouts," added an official.
Family and Public Reaction
His sister, a close relative, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.
"I am devastated. I am shattered," she said.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were ready to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."
She urged the community to avoid sharing explicit content from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a South African TV network.
