The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Discussions Regarding Bots, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a new playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough format but features a few notable changes:
- Each team includes only 8 human participants, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
- Activities performed by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Just a pair of locations are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
So essentially, this mode delivers on its title: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives more options for gamers looking for different ways to have fun with the title. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 fans are upset.
Player Reactions: From Fury to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," states a response to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says another. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," and another details all the issues they consider to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," states a different comment. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is great for me," and another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Criticisms and Community Feedback
Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it will make queue times more extended for different playlists due to the sheer number of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to remove bot farms from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising halfway, as per forum feedback. Another labels this mode as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I had great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it is that they're paying attention and responding to feedback. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, if their data indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
