He remarked, "We can already see that Moscow is scrambling to resume conversations as soon as it learns of Tomahawks." This statement addressed recent comments about supplying advanced weapons to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and Global Responses

An ex- American diplomat, Dan Fried, observed, "Putin is attempting to disrupt the momentum toward greater pressure on the Kremlin." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the chances of achieving a truce by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely seem to have decreased."

The development followed the US president had in recent days been strengthening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's call with Putin, which the Kremlin described as "highly frank and trustful."

European Energy Restrictions and Economic Effects

EU authorities have set a mandate for energy suppliers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not sourced from Russian crude, as stated in a document published on recently. This measure is part of the EU's upcoming ban on purchases of fuels made from Russian crude, which forms part of its 18th sanctions package against Russia over its military actions in the region.

Financial analysts noted that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the potential end of Indian purchases of Russian crude. Several oil processors in India are getting ready to cut purchases from Russia, with projections of a gradual decrease, as reported by insiders familiar with the situation.

"This is a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would remove a big buyer of Russian crude," commented a market analyst, adding that oil prices were stable on the trading day.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Strikes

A large-scale Russian drone and missile attack targeted gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, causing outages in eight regions. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces deployed numerous of unmanned vehicles and dozens of projectiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our energy infrastructure," said Ukraine's president, noting that strikes impacted the areas of Chernihiv, Kharkiv, central Ukraine, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

International Political Responses

Kyiv's representative to Washington, Olga Stefanishyna, stated that Russia showed its real approach to peace through the "terror" of such strikes. "Russia yet again chose weapons over talks, turning this attack into a clear blow to ongoing diplomatic initiatives," she said.

Meanwhile, the European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU had little option but to build up anti-drone defences against Russian threats. She revealed a "roadmap" to get ready for potential conflict by the end of the decade, featuring a new anti-drone system to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, dubbed the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to begin working initially by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. EU authorities aims to secure the support of member state representatives at a summit next week.
