UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
