In today's Britain, public demonstration is no longer a basic freedom. Instead, it has become a conditional permission that authorities grant or withhold at their discretion. This constitutes the underlying meaning of proposed measures that the current government is putting forward, which would determine when and where demonstrations can occur, with possible imprisonment for those who defy these restrictions.

Erosion of Democratic Rights

Earlier administrations had already undermined this essential right: the former Conservative government had given law enforcement extensive additional powers, which global rights bodies had censured as "significant and undue restrictions" on democratic freedoms. Collectively, these incremental attacks on liberty have effectively abolished the hard-won right to freedom of protest.

Exploiting Atrocity to Rationalize Crackdown

The latest limitations are being justified by referring to last week's heinous anti-Jewish assault on a Manchester Islamic center. We can all agree on widespread consensus that the security of Jewish communities in Britain must be protected. However, employing this atrocity as a pretext to stifle opposition is not only unrelated to that duty but perverts it.

"If you cannot draw the line at genocide, you likely can't establish limits at democracy," observed a prominent American author, whose words that applies equally for the present administration.

Historical Perspective of Demonstration

Consider Britain's long tradition of protest and direct action against racism and fascism, from the historic 1936 Cable Street confrontation to after World War II Jewish groups opposing fascism and the 1970s mobilizations against the far-right organization. Many of these early protesters were labeled as radicals in their time, even while they were advocating the freedoms of minorities.

Current Reality

In today's complicated landscape, here's what's actually happening: Israel – a sovereign nation – is perpetrating acts that international bodies have described as systematic destruction. Its military actions have led the global justice body to release legal indictments against Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister.

Western popular sentiment has shifted dramatically against Israel's military campaign. In Britain, a large percentage of citizens believe Israel has probably committed international law violations. Most people would support a total prohibition on weapons exports to the nation, and back the detention of Netanyahu.

Silencing Dissent

Having largely failed the argument, Israel's supporters are now exploiting a vile anti-Jewish attack to attempt to silence a mass movement against a moral catastrophe. The British government appears to be involved in this effort. Ministers have failed to implement extensive restrictions on Israel and have allowed arms exports to proceed.

People who are protesting against the destruction of Gaza have been labeled as dangerous radicals. Yet there's a important factor why there hasn't been a broader suppression on these protesters until now: extremely few protesters have made genuinely hateful statements about Jewish people, giving law enforcement little justification to take action.

Dangerous Conflation

Merging Jewish heritage with the policies of the Israeli state is not only manipulative but also harmful. The standard interpretation of antisemitism, accepted by the British government and many organizations, has been rightly challenged for potentially stifling valid commentary of Israel. However, there should be no disagreement about one of its central illustrations: that "holding Jewish people generally accountable for actions of the state of Israel" constitutes antisemitism.

Escalating Restrictions

This is why we've reached a point where law enforcement can propose that protests criticizing Israel's actions should be called off because they might "inadvertently or intentionally" endorse anti-Jewish sentiment. Similarly, government officials have stated that acknowledgment of Palestinian statehood has made political parties "implicated" in supposed mistreatment experienced by British Jews.

Double Standards

On the same day as the religious center assault, the Israeli military killed numerous of Palestinians in Gaza – increasing the terrible count from two years of ongoing violence that have taken tens of thousands of lives. British political leaders and media outlets have hardly hidden the minimal importance they assign to Palestinian existence. This represents one of the most brazen demonstrations of racism in contemporary society.

Breaking Boundaries

Our government has already passed a dangerous boundary by proscribing a specific activist group, a peaceful, anti-genocide activist collective. Multiple thousands of British protesters have been arrested, primarily for carrying placards opposing genocide and supporting the proscribed group. Many of those detained are pensioners; including a retired priest and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.

International Parallels

It's easy to see where this path leads. In the United States, political leaders helped demonize pro-Palestinian protests: a former House Speaker suggested that some were "linked with" foreign governments, while the sitting leader described such protests as antisemitic. In taking these actions, they helped legitimize the authoritarian crackdown on such demonstrations – and on free speech in general.

Future Concerns

If a hard-right government comes to power, it would be granted extensive authority to control opposition. What might a Reform government do with this repressive toolkit? Our forebears struggled, endured hardship and died to establish our freedoms. We may ultimately regret how casually we permitted them to slip away.
